Hi, I'm Matthew Cocco.

I currently work as a Software Engineer and Quantitative Risk Manager at Goldman Sachs in the Risk Engineering team, using Python, Tableau, and custom-built tooling to identify, quantify, and explain risk to internal and external stakeholders.

From 2017 to 2019, I worked as a Software Engineer at Walmart Labs, primarily with React JS, Apache Cordova, and the Express framework to solve problems in supply chain, logistics, and process improvement.

From 2013 to 2017, I was the 24/7 on-call Systems Administrator at RadioUTD, working with all things technology in the studio, custom JS and PHP development, WordPress administration, and linux-based audio streaming solutions.

I graduated in December of 2017 with a B.Sc. in Information Technology and Systems from the University of Texas at Dallas.

During 2017, I also had the honor of serving as the President of the UT Dallas Student Chapter of the Association for Information Systems.

I spent the 2015-2016 academic year abroad in Saarbrücken, Germany as a young diplomat with the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals, studying Applied Informatics at the HTWSaar and working in frontend web development at eurodata AG.

Selected Works

CoursePlanner (Systems Analysis and Design)

Led a team of 4 to design a solution to help better understand the complexities of course pre- and corequisites. We worked through multiple processes to identify & analyze a problem, explore the solution space, develop plans to implement the solution, and create a prototype (view the prototype and the code on GitHub). Over the course of the project, we delivered multiple milestones on schedule, culminating in a final report and poster presentation.

Working on this project drove home the critical importance of communication and delegation when working with a team of varying skill levels and vastly different availability to meet. How to properly collaborate (especially in remote work and coordinating between parties that could not meet) was my main takeaway from working with this team.

Exxon CSR Proposal (Business Communication)

Led a team of 4 to plan and outline an end-to-end training and recruiting program targeting underserved communities in the Dallas area. Focused around the creation and use of an endowment to provide vocational training, this program would fund education and training and provide employment opportunities for those successful in the education phase of this corporate social responsibility program.

My experience working with this team was one of my favorite group project experiences at university, by far -- it's shown me what working with a competent, motivated, and cooperative team looks and feels like. Through this project, I had the opportunity to practice higher-level coordination of efforts (less focus on specific/micro-managing feedback and more focus on strategy and concept-level decision-making) across different disciplines to bring a written proposal and presentation together.

NERF Sentry Turret (Introduction to Engineering and Computer Science)

Led a team of 5 to develop a combination hardware/software project utilizing a laptop, standalone webcam, Arduino (with relay shield), some motors driving a turntable bearing, and an electronically-actuated NERF gun.

This was a group project I led during my first semester at The University of Texas at Dallas. The impact of multidisciplinary collaboration shined through in this project -- we iteratively prototyped hardware and software solutions to specifications provided. I personally learned about the intricacies of working with the Arduino platform, Python, & OpenCV to control (and automate) the firing and motion tracking portions of the project. The most important takeaway for me with this project was how to go about communicating effectively.

About Me

Outside of work and study, I'm involved with and passionate about orgainzations and causes that encourage education, help people improve themselves, and make communities better places. I also enjoy hobby photography, sailing, and skiing.

  • RadioUTD

RadioUTD is the award-winning, student-run radio station at UT Dallas; I was a DJ for three semesters and was the Systems Admin for 4 years. Radio UTD blogs about and plays music from independent and less-known artists, catering to (just about) the entire spectrum of musical tastes. You can find us at radioutd.com and tune in at radioutd.com/tuner.

  • Association for Information Systems

I'm one of the founding members of the AIS Student Chapter at The University of Texas at Dallas, and had the pleasure of serving as President in 2017. AIS hosts industry speakers presenting to students and coordinates professional development opportunities for members. I was also part of the conference planning staff for the 2018 Student Chapter Leadership Conference.
